How not to photograph a black cat

Sometimes people leave comments on my blog asking how my mum gets such good photos of me.

Well, I am here to tell you that it doesn't always work that way. Here is a prime example:
Huffle 215

Mum says photographing a black cat is very difficult, especially indoors without a lot of natural light. That's why you see so many photos of me on my deck, or on my balcony.

Mum has to do a lot of post-processing in Photoshop too, to make sure you can see my face properly in a lot of photos. I say if she was a better photographer it wouldn't be such a problem. She says if I was more willing to be photographed it wouldn't be such a problem.

I think we'll agree to disagree on this one.

Actually, I like that photo the best! You look like a big ball of black fur with two green eyes. I can deal with that.

We don't know why, but we sort of like this pic of you:) Mom is trying so hard to figure out photoshop but isn't getting very far. And we think your mom has great photography skills.

Maybe if she feeds you enough ham, she can come around to your way of thinking?

We have lots of black cats and can understand what you mean. We are so beuatiful but Mom can't get that on camera!

My mom takes several pictures of me before she finds one that will work because of my big eyes! I also don't go outside, so she doesn't have the natural sunlight. I think your mom does a beautiful job capturing your beauty.

That being said, that photo really shows off your eyes! VERY cool!

Before me, Stella, my Mom had a little black Scottie. She says taking a picture of Him or Me, is like taking a picture of a hole in the floor. Especially if we turn our heads around!

I loved purple you in your purple bed with all the purple accessories.

Kisses,
Stella

Your photos are always handsome, but a tip that cat photographers often use, is to put some white powder, like cornstarch or baby powder, along each side of the bridge of your nose, to make it reflect and show definition...we're just sayin'

My husband is a photographer so I know what you mean about photographing inside. You look so great on the deck!

Huffle we love your deck photos. Mum says it is tricky with grey cats too.

Tell me about it!!!

Especially if you have lovely glowing fur like you and I, Ma has to modify the light in most the pictures to make me show up a lil.

Happy Holidays

Dark Gray cats inside are hard, too. Grayson is even harder than Gandalf for some reason.

I'm just beginning with Photoshop, but I already love it!

Photoguy has the same problems. Flash photography and black and white cats don't go together really well. But that's fine with us. At least our secret nocturnal life remains private.

The eyes really are the issue, aren't they? It's so much better to be able to use natural light!

My mum has trouble taking photos of me sometimes too. She likes to have me near a window, or have enough light that I don't just end up a big black spot. :)

I agree with your Mom, Huffle! It is very difficult, especially with your face. And you have such lovely features, she works hard to make sure everybody can see them.

You're mom's a great photographer, Huffle. She brings out the real beauty in you.

You turned on your lasers on purpose, didn't you dear Huffle.
We kitties know that. Such a clever girl.

Your pictures are always beautiful because your mum has such a beautiful cat to work with.

My human - who has photographed professionally and even won a couple of awards - agrees: it's hard to get that stunning blackness just right. She thinks when it comes to photographing cats in general, it's not all that easy to do a good job of it. But we love your photographs and think your human does pretty well!

Mom has fits over photographing me! She could learn from your mom.

It's true -- your photos are so lovely. Mom didn't know how difficult it is to photograph dark-colored cats until Donut came along! We have major problems.

The Crew said...

Hmmmm, yes I see the problem. A black blob with eyes!
